Strengthening Vietnamese Independent Journalism

Vietnamese journalists are enduring severe persecution under the country’s totalitarian regime. It is no exaggeration to assert that there is no independent or uncensored media within Vietnam. The only viable option for independent journalism is to operate from outside the country, in places such as Taiwan or Thailand. However, the success of these exile media outlets hinges on the self-sacrificing efforts of journalists within Vietnam, who work under strict security measures, incognito, and often in hiding. The challenges they face are formidable.

> In close collaboration with our Vietnamese partners, we conduct online workshops on data journalism and democratic transition, tailored for Vietnamese participants. We also organise internships and advocacy trips for Vietnamese journalists to the European Union and the Czech Republic. Furthermore, we develop bespoke methodologies in advanced journalism specifically designed for independent Vietnamese media.

Our position within the European Union grants us a unique advantage in drawing attention to EU-Vietnam relations, highlighting the necessity of holding Vietnam accountable to the commitments it has made in various agreements.

> We facilitate advocacy meetings, negotiations, and information campaigns aimed at promoting the democratisation of Vietnam.

The realities of life and the political landscape in Vietnam are not well understood in the EU. Therefore, we recognise the importance of disseminating information and raising public awareness about the nature of the regime governing the country that many Europeans enjoy visiting during their summer holidays.

> We prepare episodes on Vietnam events and context of country development for our Pacifica podcast.
